About the Author

Dr. D. is a board-certified, U.S.-trained pediatrician in private practice for the past fifteen years. After diagnosing herself with early-onset Type 2 Diabetes as a pre-medical student at age 21, she has learned to cope with chronic illness and struggles with many of the complications that come with long-standing diabetes: kidney disease, heart disease, and eye and vision issues.  Having spent a lifetime dealing with obesity, researching and trying nearly every diet popularized in the past thirty years, and finally undergoing laparoscopic banding surgery in 2006, she is quite experienced with the struggles that face overweight children, adolescents and their families.  It has become her personal passion and professional goal to help families with their battle against obesity and to decrease the epidemic of early-onset diabetes in our youth. She takes a blame-free, common-sense,  practical approach to achieving goals in small steps while keeping life enjoyable, affordable and as stress-free as possible.
While not at work, she fills her days as a single mother, raising a daughter adopted from Guatemala.
